Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Fred Hutch)

NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center founded in 1972 and based in Seattle Washington

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center was founded in Seattle in 1972 and became one of the original NCI-designated Cancer Centers. The Fred Hutch is part of a consortium together with the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s, and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) whose faculty conduct pioneering research across five scientific areas of special focus: cancer immunotherapy; basic biology of cancer; population-based research; health care economics and outcomes research; and global oncology. Three Hutch faculty have received Nobel prizes for their research: Dr. E. Donnall Thomas (1990), Dr. Leland “Lee” Hartwell (1998) and Dr. Linda Buck (2003). The Fred Hutch, through the Consortium, has an active program of clinical trials with more than 600 clinical studies active at any one time, investigating the safety and efficacy of new methods of diagnosis, treatment, preventive and supportive care.
